Why Gold Fill and Vermeil Jewelry Is A Smart Choice

Gold fill jewelry gives you longevity and durability - it’s less likely to tarnish or scratch and easier to clean because it contains 100x more gold alloy than gold-plated jewelry.

Gold-filled metals are made by heating and bonding two layers of pure gold alloy to a core metal (usually jeweler’s brass or copper), giving it much more durability and helping it stay beautiful longer than gold-plated jewelry.  We like 14 karat and 18 karat gold because it is harder and stronger than higher karats.

As long as gold fill jewelry is well cared for, it can last a lifetime.  Gold fill jewelry is easy to clean - just use an untreated cloth or mild soapy water (be sure not to use anything abrasive), or a specially made jewelry cleaning cloth.  And always apply lotions, hair sprays or perfumes before putting on your jewelry. This will help your jewelry to look new and clean.

Gold vermeil (pronounced “ver-may”) is made when sterling silver is coated with a thin layer of gold.  Vermeil made in the United States has a minimum requirement of 10 karat gold. At On Holiday, we use 14 karat -or 18 karat gold vermeil.  The higher the karat, the softer the gold becomes, which is why we shy away from using vermeil above 18 karats.  Unlike gold fill, vermeil has a thinner layer of gold over it’s core. But, because vermeil has a sterling silver core, it has more value and longevity than gold-plated jewelry.  Care should be taken when cleaning vermeil so as not to deeply scratch the layer of gold. An untreated cloth or specially made jewelry cleaning cloth can be used to remove fingerprints, oils, and light scratches.

On the contrary, gold-plated jewelry can’t stand up to much water, heat or wear.  A small scratch on gold-plated jewelry will expose the jeweler’s brass underneath.  Because the thin layer of gold-plating can wear off easily, gold-plated jewelry tarnishes faster and more often than gold-fill jewelry.  And you shouldn’t clean gold-plated jewelry unless you absolutely have to.

In addition to the durability and look of gold fill and vermeil jewelry, an added bonus is the price point.  Compared to pure gold jewelry, even hand-crafted gold fill and vermeil jewelry can be made available at a much friendlier cost.  The value you receive when purchasing gold fill and vermeil jewelry far exceeds any savings you would gain from purchasing a less expensive gold-plated piece.
